Kids Create Change is partnering with the Evanston Public Library (EPL) and the Smithsonian Institution to host a series of workshops as part of the “The Bias Inside Us” exhibit April 9 - May 8, 2022. This community engagement project from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) raises awareness about the social science and psychology of implicit bias, the impact of this bias and what people can do about it.
Join Us in Creating a "Disrupting Bias" Tapestry!
In our art workshops, we'll be co-creating an Disrupting-Bias Tapestry. This project is designed to bring people together in a shared creative experience that inspires dialogue and action for social change. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in conversations about conscious and unconscious bias and how we can work to prevent its harmful effects. Bias presents as stereotypes, discrimination and prejudice and can result in racism, sexism, antisemitism, homophobia, ageism, ableism, classism and xenophobia. Together we commit to recognizing bias in ourselves and our community, and taking actions that will work to dismantle the unfair systems and policies that are rooted in bias.
Why a Tapestry?
A tapestry is defined as an intricate or complex combination of things or sequence of events. It symbolizes a weaving together of our collective ideas, stories, and commitments to change. The project is designed for all ages and invites the community-at-large to add to its collective narrative of change.
Workshops are free and open to the public. Join us in a creative exploration of conscious and unconscious bias in ourselves and our community, and how we might take personal actions that lead to collective change. Participants will be able to add to a community tapestry and learn about community art and social justice.
